Why Two Different VS Code Extensions for Oracle Database?

Jared CSep 18 2024 — edited Sep 19 2024

I wanted to get more information on this post, which is now locked. I'm new to the Oracle community, and it seems a bit odd that there are two products/extensions for basically the same purpose: database management and query development (please correct me if I'm wrong). I believe Christian Shay and Jeff Smith are the product managers, respectively.

Are there plans to merge these together one day? Is there somewhere that does a meticulous comparison between these tools? Why would I use one over the other? Or will I have to just get used to using both of them (because there do appear to be features unique to each respective tool)?

This all came up for me when I was looking up how to debug PL/SQL code. I reviewed an article from Christian Shay but up to now I was just using the SQL Developer VS Code extension.
