Why is the default JRE download 7u55 not 8u5 ?

It's May 6th 2014. Java 8 was released on 18th March and 8u5 was released on 15th April.

So why when I go to download the latest JRE to at https://www.java.com/en/download/ does it offer me 7u55?

I guess I don't fully understand the release cycle, but I can't find anyone who can tell me what's going on.

Yes I know I can find the SE and JRE to download to check myself, but what about end users? For example, the deployJava.js javascript library will take people to the same download page wont it? End users shouldn't have to know that there is a new release.

OR (like I say) I don't understand the release cycle and Java 8 isn't actually released for end users. Or is it? If not then when will it be?

Thanks in anticipation.
