Oracle Jobs suddenly generating massive archive redo logs (~30-80GB) - ORA-00257 Archiver Error

Al Pizano4 days ago

Hi guys, we have an Oracle 8 server and we haven't had any code changes to what our scheduled jobs call, yet they started generating massive redo logs since the past few weeks. It looked like the problem escalated on 5/26, as we had multiple jobs fail or “hang” running 18-22 hours etc.. until we manually killed them. Then on 5/27 AM , we got the ORA-00257:archiver error

We also have another environment (TEST) on another database, which the same exact jobs/code with roughly the same counts and data in tables, and when we ran identical jobs, we saw their typical redo space (~1gb -8gb) but on PROD db (different database) is where the redo ranges from ~30-80gb for the same job/proc - Does anyone know what would cause this? We are archiving to two drives:

  • D:\ORADATA\RCRSDB19\ARCHIVELOGS
  • F:\ORADATA\RCRSDB19\ARCHIVELOGS

Is that normal? Should we be using two drives? either way, could it be the drives themselves failing?

Our F drive actually has the Oracle install and looks something like:
Folder SizeGB
------ ------
F:\app 888.74
F:\ORADATA 602.02
F:\OracleInstall 58.17

We have setup RMAN, and before that, manually deleted archive files before March 31st, 2026, just that again, they appear to be generating massive sizes for some reason, when they never did before, just wanted to see if anyone could provide insight to this or possible causes? Thanks.
