Not sure what is happening, but we cannot figure it out…
Running any opatch command from the ORACLE_HOME location shows java options and never runs with an error code 1:

The default VM is server.

A ; separated list of directories, JAR archives,
and ZIP archives to search for class files.
-D<name>=<value>
set a system property
-verbose:[class|gc|jni]
enable verbose output
-version print product version and exit

require the specified version to run
-showversion print product version and continue

Every possible angle of JAVA_HOME and ORACLE_HOME has been explored and tried.
Has anyone ever encountered this?
Java 1.8 is working fine.
