"failed" arn driver (AR9285)

I have a Compaq CQ56Z with an Atheros AR9285 wifi chip. Solaris 11 Express 2010.11 finds the device and loads the driver OK. I can run dladm scan-wifi and it finds wireless networks. However, I can't connect to any of them. ipadm show-if says the STATE of the arn0 interface is "failed."

Does anyone know why the arn0 interface would be "failed" and what I could try to fix this?
