detaching BranchGroup

Is it possible to remove a BranchGroup which has been added to SimpleUniverse-instance with addBranchGraph-method?
What is the role of ALLOW_DETACH-field in BranchGroup and how do you use it?
My goal is to have the picture to change in the same Canvas3D and I thought it could be done by replacing (first remove and then add another) BranchGroup. Is this a prudent way?
