DB Servers

user599292Sep 1 2009 — edited Sep 1 2009
Having just about mastered SQL and Database architecture, I am trying to get up to speed on the architecture of Oracle Applications. Having discussed this with a “techie” within our Company, I am seriously baffled. They used about every abbreviation known to man; therefore I have decided I have a huge gap in knowledge that I need to plug asap. The techies keep mentioning our Databases are housed on UNIX boxes, which I assume mean Servers. So do the Oracle Databases get installed onto a Server with UNIX as the OS? Is that likely what they are referring too?

So a “DB Server” is essentially a set of Databases on a UNIX Server? Is that correct? Do the vast majority of Oracle Database installations go onto UNIX boxes, or is it varied with Windows?

How important is hardening the UNIX server in the grand scheme of things, i.e. where does it rank alongside hardening the Oracle Databases themselves, and application controls? Just as important? Or lower down the pecking order?
