Database incarnation and disaster recovery

markdba123Nov 12 2024

Running 12.1.0.4 Primary and Standby databases on ODA x8-2 running 19.0 GI.

We have a requirement to run a “DR” test once a year. Our process is to create an additional standby so we don't disturb or have an DR event during the test. We keep both DR and DRTEST in sync until the test and then break link between PROD and DRTEST. We then flip DRTEST from standby mode to primary. This always works very well except the database incarnation for PROD leaving DR along. I believe this in part due to running 19.0 GI with a 12.1.0.4 database (non-CDB).

My question(s): how much of an issue is this? Is changing PROD incarnation back to the previous incarnation the proper solution? Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mark
