Community Server API

Is there any API that exposes community server functionality viz. comment, rating, review, blogs?
Although the Community Dev guide only mentions about exposing these functionality via widgets, should one use the REST API [http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E29495_01/doc.1111/webcenter_sites_11gr1_wem_rest_api_resource_ref.pdf] & operate on the corresponding asset types like cos_comment_record for comments?
