-XX:NewSize and MaxNewSize vs. -XX:NewRatio

843811Oct 13 2003 — edited Oct 21 2003
I have a 2.5G JVM (1.3.1). Profiling indicates our app creates too many temporary objects resulting in large/slow GCs. So, I'd like to increase the size of the young generation space in the JVM.

My question is: what is the best setting to use for this? NewRatio or NewSize/MaxNewSize ?? Are you supposed to set both NewRatio and NewSize/MaxNewSize or only one of them? For instance, if I set my -XX:NewRatio=2 and my -XX:NewSize and -XX:MaxNewSize=(something less than NewRatio's memory) which setting wins?

tia,
Jason
