XSLT for ETL engine

I am currently working on the development of an ETL engine for extracting and transforming data from diverse sources and destinations. I wanted to know that advantages and drawbacks of using XSLT over conventional methodologies and why do most of the ETL engines available in the market do not make use of XSLT.
Please do shed some light on this one.
