writing pdf files using java

hi,
i'm currently try to develop a program which read html templates and generate some reports and save those reports in html format. this works fine. but i feel its better the reports are in pdf format instead of html.
did anyone know how to do this using java....and is there any free api for this. i search on google there are several apis but none of them are free.
