World of Warcraft caused this effect, why does it ALSO occur with Java now?

- I recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP (SP2, latest updates).
- I installed JRE (latest version from sun's website) to use the latest version of Azureus (AZ).
- I use Windows Media Player (WMP) to watch videos.
- I downloaded the latest updates to WMP and the latest video drivers. (I am using an eVGA Nvidia 6800GT with the latest drivers from nvidia's website)
In this setup, Azureus, Java, and WMP all worked fine together. No problems.
NEXT,
- I installed World of Warcraft (WoW)
While WoW is running, my video card seems to render a certain full screen blurring effect. View examples here:
WoW running: http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~kahn/wowrunning.bmp
WoW not running: http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~kahn/nowow.bmp
Here's the interesting part. Now, not only WoW enables this effect, but Java also enables this effect.
Meaning, if I close WoW, the effect turns off. If I then open the Java console or Java control panel, the effect turns ON.
Furthermore, while AZ is running, (AZ uses Java), this full screen blur effect interferes with the video overlay on my video card.
What does this effect have to do with Java? Why did Java NOT use this effect before installing WoW, and after installing Wow, it now DOES use this effect?
In summary,
- Java installed on a clean reinstall of WinXP worked fine with WMP
- Running Java after installing WoW causes video overlay not to work. This means WMP does not work with Java either, because WMP uses the video overlay which utilizes the 2D pipeline from the video card.
What the heck is happening? Please tell me WHY java is now involved with this video setting that it previously had nothing to do with (seemingly)?
