With Coherence do I still use my regular Oracle RDBMS?

I know it sounds a very newbie question, but I was looking for a picture that or explanation how Coherence would integrate with my existing Oracle 10g/11g database. Today we keep our data in OLTP databases, and I would love to see our transactions flying on a in-memory database. My questions are:
1) Once I start using Coherence, all the data stays persistently there and it lo longer uses my regular RDBMS Oracle 11g?
2) Is Coherence an in-memory database that keeps a copy of my Oracle 11g RDBMS and constantly flushed the data back to the RDBMS Oracle 11g?

Thanks,

Sandro
