Windows 7 x64 appcrash - java.dll - 6.0.230.5

Just installed Windows 7 x64 and have installed both 32 & 64 bit versions of Java SE 6.0.230.5. 6 out of 7 times when I try to launch Java in a browser window it crashes. The last time I was able to get it to work I had uninstalled both 32 & 64 and reinstalled both with the 32 bit version the last one I installed. Not sure if that matters much.

I'm not sure if this is a freak issue with my installation or if it is an issue with the latest java and Win 7 x64 or something all together different.
I've just uninstalled for the 4th time and have downloaded the jdk-7 and jre-7 products for 32/64 and am going to try using those. I was looking for previous versions of jre-6 but can't seem to find any. In light of that I'm going to move forward with jre-7 and see if this works.
If anyone has experience resolving this issue any help would be greatly appreciated.
