Win64 bit java on windows 7

I have iinstalled jre 6.0.0.18 on a computer windows 7 with windows 64 bit. I installed java jre 32 bit because I am running 32 bit ie browser.

When I try to run 'java' at DOS command line the command fails i.e. I get
'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Should I be uninstalling and going to 64 bit java?
