why use Xquery

What does xquery's cryptic FLOWR syntax and ora: functions, that simple extract, extractvalue, XMLSequence etc don't provide ?
Is it performance ?
I guess I am having trouble understanding the benefits of using xquery , when almost every thing can be achieved in plain SQL , using extract, extractvalue, existsnode, XMLSequence etc.

Can any one care to enlighten me ?
