Why use NodeManager with OID 12c Standalone

Hi,

I am installing an OID 12c (12.2.0.4) environment. I will have 3 OID nodes, only ldapd processes, no replication or directory integration.
Why would I need NodeManager? If I understand correctly, it is only used when configuring or administering through Weblogic Console or FMW EM Console, but I have installed the minimum standalone OID so I don't (and won't) have those components.
The installation process goes through configuring a domain and NodeManager, but once it is installed, can I just leave NodeManager down and just use oidmon and oidctl?
