Why does it take so long to load tables when editting tables with SQL Developer?

I realize there are lots of ways to edit tables with SQL statements that are fast and fine. I have some users who just like to use the editor. Question is why it takes SOOO long to load the table to edit? Sometimes it is 5 minutes or more!??

Just because it might come up, I did verify that I am running the latest version.
