Why does install of SXDE 1/08 with ATI Radeon X850XT fail?

I recently received my SXDE 1/08 DVD and tried the SXDE interactive install without success. I just spent some more time with it and it seems the install fails because the display driver fails to initialize for my ATI Radeon X850XT 256MB PCIE graphics card. After entering F2 to accept the default keyboard locale, accepting the next screen to continue, the screen flashes some text too fast to see goes blank and comes up with the errors. By running */usr/X11/bin/Xorg* from the command line I get the same screen of errors so assumed that was the source.

I ran Xorg manually with a loglevel=10 and confirmed that while the card was properly recognized and was listed under the radeon driver, the ati driver install was attempted and failed.

Of course, it bombs the same running the Solaris Express interactive installation option. I do NOT really want to use the old text installer -- the new installer was one of the reasons I got the DVD.

I also ran the SDDTool and it recognized the card and tells me it will use the vgatext kernel driver and radeon Xorg driver and lists the device as a *R480 [Radeon X850XT (PCIE)] (Primary)*. It seems the video adapter should be recognized and properly initialized.

I do not see either the xorgconfig or xorgcfg utilities on the DVD to attempt to intervene manually.

Is there a way to manually override the detection and get the correct display driver to install and build a good /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

If so, how do I restart the installation?
