Which is better: Backup to agent/tape or disk?

We have the option to install an agent from our backup application
that would, I believe, perform RMAN backups direct to backup tape.
Alternatively we can make RMAN backups to disk, and run a cheap
file system agent and grab the disk based dumps. Is either method
known to be a better solution? Using an agent/tape seems riskier.
