Which backup controlfile is right to use?

I am still confused about the roles of controlfile.

Using RMAN,

I issue the following:

1. Monday > Backup controlfile;

2. Tuesday > Backup database;

3. Wednesday > Backup controlfile;

Then restore Tuesday backup to another server.

Which controlfile backup is correct to use? The one done before the backup database of the one done after?

Please help...
