Where is JAVA??

First, I admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed OK? I loaded JDK 6 on my MS Windows XP. I see a series of folders C:\Program Files\Java , 1 jdk and 5 jre. I guess i expected to get to the program from my start menu but it's not there. Is there no GUI? How do I get into the JAVA goodies and learn some language? I suppose I've been ruined by ASP.NET and it's here-it-is GUI.
