Where are the released documents being stored?

So, I'm new to WebCenter as a whole, this includes IPM/UCM/Capture, etc. My question is, when I "release" a scanned document into imaging from the capture client, or import the document into imaging via folder imports, where are the actual documents being stored? Are they being stored int he UCM repository or elsewhere?
