Where and how to learn Java?

I am new to Java. I want to learn and become proficient in Java programing but I do not have a structured plan. If you were asked to teach a novice basic Java programing where would you start and what would you teach to help build their knowledge in a rational and constructive way?
So far all I have managed to do is dowload and install the SEJDK version 6 and Greenfoot. I have checked to see if Greenfoot opens which it does but nothing else. I presume because Greenfoot has opened then I have successfully installed both the JDK and the JRE?
New and bewildered!
