What triggers VIP failover?

I have been asked to test failover of a node, and I need the VIP to fail from one node to another node in the cluster (4-node cluster v 10.2.0.3.0). What triggers the VIP failover? WIll just shutting down cluster services deliver the desired result, or will the VIP interface on the machine (AIX 5.3) need to disabled or a whole shutdown?
