What the heck is a FLOB?

John SpencerNov 21 2005 — edited Nov 22 2005
I was working on a problem that Metalink indicated might be related to a username having either an invalid character, or beginning with a reserved word. So, I was looking at v$reserved_words. One of the reserved words is FLOB!

A search on Metalink turned up 3 hits for flob. One as a table alias and the other two in a list of reserved words. One of the references seems to indicate that it was new in Oracle 8 "The key words and reserved words new to Oracle8 Enterprise Edition are ..." and the list included FLOB.

There doesn't appear to be any reference to FLOB in any of the Oracle supplied scripts in my ORACLE_HOME directory, I even used strings on a couple of the executable and couldn't find it.

Does anyone have any idea what a FLOB is?

Thanks
John
