What technology for a J2ME <-> Database application?

Hello everyone,

I am pretty new to Java technology in general, concentrating now on J2ME. Therefore may I ask for your suggestions as to:

What technology would you suggest for an application, that features:

- a central database server (pretty simple data - i.e. 1 - 3 tables but possibly BIG and must be fast, RELIABLE, administrable and back-up ready)
- contacted from mobile phones' J2ME - (rather Http + Https but maybe socked + SSL connections) - MANY USERS SIMULTANEOUSLY holding their personal data and querying / updating the big common data!

What database to use? What on top of that? A servlet? There won't be complicated business logic.
I'd like it to be free, but if safety/reliability should be compromised, I could buy a solution.

I hope I've made myself clear, and hope for your understanding
thanks in advance
Yar
