What is the relationship between essbase and planning

I am a newer to hyperion. I do not quite got the idea of essbase.

What is the role of essbase? Is it provide basic service to planing or it is just another stand alone data warehouse?

Must Planning run on essbase?
Can planning be installed without a essbase?
