What is the need if database is 24/7 ..........

Hi all,
If my Database is running 24/7 then what is the need to give 'shutdown immediate'
during backup-recovery.and what will happen if archive log list is disable
OR,
There is an importance to enable/disable the archive log list for 24/7 running database.
