What is the significance of ORACLE_BASE environment variable ?
Today I was installing Oracle Client for the apps team. One of the apps guy asked me why do we set ORACLE_BASE for installation/post-installation ? All I know is that, it is a base directory within which ORACLE_HOME is located .

I told him that ORACLE_BASE is like 'Program files' folder in Windows. Inside this 'Program Files' folder you will have installation directories. Is this a bad analogy ? ;)

Although I have set it for installations hundreds of times, didn't quite understand the significance of it ? Any thoughts on this ?
