What is KCV (Key Check Value) in 3DES used for?

Hi Friends..

I want to know what is KCV (Key Check Value) used for?..
i found that 3DES operation (2Keys length or 3Keys length) sometimes needs KCV (Key Check Value)..
As far as i know the KCV itself computed as Follows :
3DES(Keys, IV(all zeroes), Data (8byte zeroes)

Please correct me if i'm wrong..
