What is JSP?

Hello there. Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, and I'll get slapped n the face, but what JSP exactly is? I mean, can It be used for creating web sites like PHP? Does it work this way? Suppose I have a web server which has a Java capability - will I be able to create HTML pages or sth? Don't screem If I'm very wrong...
