What is grain in database?

tahasozgenJul 24 2015 — edited Jul 24 2015

Hi There;

In this link, there is a sentence : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B10500_01/server.920/a96520/mv.htm

It is possible and advantageous to track freshness to a finer grain than the entire materialized view. The ability to identify which rows in a materialized view are affected by a certain detail table partition, is known as Partition Change Tracking (PCT).

What is grain in this context? Is it related with this one? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granularity Also I wonder another thing, when I searched throughout the oracle web site, I encountered a term, fine grained. Is these two thing same?

Thanks in advance.
