What is entity in DBMS

Hi,
I am trying to understand the meaning of entity. Can I say something like this :

Noun=Noun is the name of a person, place or thing.
So entity is equal to a Noun + a conceptual term like customer transaction ?

Even I have read below link :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entity

But still I have confusion for the defination of entity in term of DBMS. Kindly quote your definations.
