What does the "Skip NLS settings" box do exactly?

Hi,

My version is 17.2.0.188 and I'm wondering what the "Skip NLS settings" box is used for. I've read the documentation but I couldn't find anything on that box. It seemed to me ticking the box would prevent the SQL developer NLS settings from being applied to the session and let the NLS instance settings be inherited, but that doesn't seem to be it. Ticked or not, my NLS settings are still those SQL Developer infers from my computer environment, that is, French-related NLS settings (those you see in the greyed out values):

Hence my question what does the "Skip NLS settings" box is meant for?
