What does the "On New Foreign Key" in Main Menu->Tools->Preferences->Data Modeler->Model do?

FlyingDutchmanOct 23 2025

Hi there,

I've been playing around with SDDM, and trying to model foreign keys in Entity Models, and came across this field:

“On New Foreign Key”

in:

Main Menu→Tools→Preferences→Data Modeler→Model

It accepts one of two values, either “Existing by template” or “New Column”.

There is no mention of this field in the help system, that I have found.

Please can you tell me how each of the two values affect SDDM operation. The “Existing By Template” option may require more explanation, as when I first saw it I started asking myself questions such as “existing ‘what exactly’, and which template”, and “Can I modify the template, or change it to a different template as required, and where is the template defined etc.”

Also quick question: What is the future of Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler?

Thanks in advance.

John,

PS This is probably the first of a few questions regarding foreign keys in the Entity Model Diagram.
