What does namespace do in the adf-config.xml

Could anybody explain what namespace does exactly in the adf-config? I've read some documents which mention about it but really haven't get idea.

              <namespace metadata-store-usage="mstore-usage_2"
               path="/apps/AIAMetadata"/>
              <namespace metadata-store-usage="mstore-usage_3" 
               path="/soa/shared"/>
