what does degree in dbms_stats?

When I use degree in DBMS-Stats what exactly does it do?

Does it alter the gathering session to use morge than one processor for gatherin?

Does it alter the tables/indexes the be accessed parallel?

I guess the first option but i'm not sure. :)
