What do you think about PMD?

A colleague has approached me about code I wrote that is bringing severity messages in PMD, requesting that I fix them.

How seriously should a software engineer take PMD results because it seems EXTREMELY picky about coding standards.

Further is it normal for me to want to "shoot the messenger" in this case... forgive the pun.
