What are directories /opt, /usr/ and /var for

After a quick look at the Solaris 10 file system layout, I am not clear what are the functionalities of the directories /opt, /usr/ and /var. For example, if I am installing some software for all users of the system such as Adobe reader, which directory should I put the software files in?
