WF_NOTIFICATIONS, WF_NOTIFICATION_IN AND WF_NOTIFICATION_OUT RELATIONS

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the
- how wf_notifications and wf_notification_out tables are linked
- how wf_notifications and wf_notifiication_in tables are linked

I have sent a notification to a role through email, that created a record in wf_notifications. Its an approval type notification. I have sent the response from the mail box.

Where should i see if the reply/response email is processed in the system or not ?
