Web Services to send/receive data

Dear All,

I want to develop a PHP Web Service to send/receive data to a remote database. Can anyone guide me what technologies should be used like PHP/XML/JSON/SOAP etc and any helpful material.

For example i want to get employees data from a server on a remote location to my database and vice versa.
