ways to understand and manage a databse

user1000979Aug 3 2009 — edited Aug 4 2009
databse version: Oracle 10g

I have a task to understand a database of around 2500 tables in a months time.
After a months time, I would be involved in creating the base data like customer, product ect..
ALso in data cleansing and all. The data created by me needs to be perfect control. I need to be aware of any changes and issues with these data.

I have 2 qwestions in this.

1. what is the best possible way to first get familiar with the database - I dont have the option of going through the code. The source code is complex and its not in oracle. There is no ER diagram.
2. How to control and amange the data set.

I know lot of people would have gone through it and mastered. So, Please help!!
Your input is greatly appreciated.
