Way to kill MMAN background process safely

Is there a safe way to kill the background process MMAN? We need this because it gets into wait event "Wait for SGA component shrink". And it freezes the whole system after awhile. We are working on ways to avoid it. I would like to know if it is possible to kill the MMAN process once we notice this wait event.
