VPN re-neogitation killing datasource

We are trying to use a remote server through a VPN connecting to our Oracle 8i database. However, periodically the VPN re-negotiates and blows out the DB connection (oracle). Is there any setting to test the connection and re-establish it to handle the drop in connectivity during the VPN re-neogitation?
