VMWare's 'Fault tolerance' (Active Passive HA) vs RAC

Y.RamletJun 8 2017 — edited Jun 15 2017

Oracle RDBMS Version: 11.2.0.4

Operating System: Oracle Linux 6.9

Virtualization env : VMWare

For any yet to be live application , the application team wants High Availability for their DB. Due to the high costs, this application team doesn't want to spend much on RAC Licence.

This DB will be hosted on a VMWare VM. As an alternative to RAC, VMWare admin has advised to create a stand alone DB and he will configure VMWare 'Fault Tolerance' for that DB VM. With VMWare 'Fault Tolerance' , If the DB VM crashes for any reason, it will be 'brought up' in another ESX server with the same IP in Milliseconds apparently. So, this will be an Active-Passive HA.

Application team doesn't need Query failover which RAC provides. Can somebody tell me what are the other benefits which RAC offers which the above mentioned VMWare's 'Fault Tolerance' cannot offer.
