Virtual private network: Solaris vs. Windows Server or Linux
807557Aug 5 2008 — edited Aug 6 2008Hi,
I am new to Solaris, and I apologize if my question sounds dumb.
I've read that Solaris provides better performance than any other OS.
I am going to create a virtual private network using xVM VirtualBox running on Sun Fire X2200 M2 Server (64-bit). The network will be used for testing a custom distributed application which parts are deployed to several servers (hence, the need for the network on this machine).
The network will consist of several guest OSs (Windows Server 200/2003/2008) running simultaneously.
I am trying to figure out what the best choice of a host OS would be: Solaris 10, Windows Server 2003, Fedora Core 9, or openSUSE 11.
The host operating system allocates and manages resources for the guest OSs.
I assume (please excuse my ignorance) that Solaris shines when it's installed and running on SPARC machines, but (just a guess) a bit worse when running with AMD processors.
Which host OS installed on a Sun Fire X2200 M2 Server with 2 (two) AMD Opteron processors will provide the best performance?
Or, is any host OS going to be just the same as the others?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dmitriy
