VIPs in SOA Cluster

Hi Guys,

Need some help to understand the concept of VIPs while creating the SOA Cluster.

In Oracle enterprise Guide, it is recommended that we create VIP's for all managed server on a node and use them during domain creation.

My confusion, what is VIP, why we need it and what benefit does it offer.
