validate (record_scope) causing 92101

I wanted to do validate(record_scope) but it turns out that it is very likely to cause
frm-92101. Can anyone think of a way to get around that? You'd think it was
because the when-validate-record trigger was bad but it isn't.
forms 10.1.2.0.2 using jinitiator 1.3.1.28
in ie 6.
